Use of /etc/hosts files in resolving the dns name

Hello,

For what purpose /etc/hosts file is used.I mean how any request coming to a DNS server or a switch would know that which name and ip are configured in /etc/hosts files of a server?

"Please mount volume 2 on /dev/rmt0.1" message during mksysb restore

Dear all

First of all, my English not so good.

We have p52a (production server) and p52a (test server). Tape drives are VXA2.

When both servers were AIX 5.3, mksysb on production server and restoring to test server was OK.

The production server was AIX 5.3 and recently upgraded to AIX 6.1 TL06 sp05 by migration install.

when I did mksysb on production server and then restored to test server, the following message appeared and got stuck:

"Please mount volume 2 on /dev/rmt0.1"

Of course only one tape media was used and successful when I did mksysb. There was no error log.

I tried different tape medias and changing tape device "block size" also but results were same.

Moreover, I tried mkdvd backup on production server and restored it to test server, but it also didn't work.

When I tried lsmksysb, it shows the content of os backup for a while, but got stuck at following:

I installed AIX 6.1 (new & completed install) and mksysb on test server, then restored it to test server itself was OK.

Please find an attached file for your reference.

Actually, I did mksysb and restoring over 10 years but didn't see this kind of problem.

Anyone can help me?

RMstartr.log showing multiple restarts per hour

Hi all,

Google's not helping on this one...

In investigating why /var was filling up I discovered that /var/ct/RMstart.log and RMstop.log were HUGE. On further investigation I discovered that IBM.MgmtDomainRM was restarting several times per hour...

Given that I am Ux Adm for a small IT Co., this is beyond my skills...

Can anyone point me in the right direction to start to understand why this happening and how to resolve this?

The machine in question is a AIX 7.1 VM on Power6

On HP_UX i download the patches and then install with swinstall
On AIX,i found "service packs" but there are many,i have to install all service packs,or the latest is ok?

On other unix system i use enable ttya1 or vi inittab
and add getty line with port and serial.
Here i try
first serials

lsdev -Cc adapter | grep -i serial

penable vty0
init q
But no serial login appears.
Why?

I am trying to upgrade one of my servers which is AIX 7.1.0.3 to AIX 7.1.3.3. I have downloaded the fix packs and stored in /tmp/TL3SP3 directory.
I ran inutoc .; bffcreate -ad; inutoc .
then smitty installp
I get an error like this

Problem with TL and mp64

GPFS NodeData File problem

Hi Everyone

I have configured two node GPFS cluster and it is running fine. But today when I have rebooted one of the node and after starting GPFS one node shows down. on investigating I have checked that mmfsNodeData file is missing from location /var/mmfs/gen/ on one node. I am receiving the following error. Please let me know how to recover it.

Rlogin=false suggestions to change

Hi,

I have a few user id's that have the need to restrict direct login request so we have rlogin set to false. The only way to login is with su - <user>

is there anyway that I can enable this to accept connections with ssh keys from the system?

basically I want to login as a user on the localhost, then I want to execute:

If possible I want to only allow 1 user the ability to ssh into the account, and still allow su for everyone else.

Restore AIX

Suppose this situation.
Old AIX 7.1:i have full backups made with cpio,one for usr,one for var,one for etc,one for home,etc
New AIX 7.1:i have new disks(larger) is possible to restore
cpio archives without problems?
Or i will have problem with odm,lv information stored,etc?

Hi,

I am trying to implement a service on AIX based on ONCRPC protocal and I want to use a RPC library called oncrpc4j because it is a non-blocked i/o library. I found it works fine on my work machine (WIndows 7) but failed on my AIX work station. The author of oncrpc4j told me that check that rpcbind/portmap on AIX allowes updates from non privileged ports. But I just can find out how to do this, is anybody could provide help? Thank you.

Trigger executable on HMC on occurence of an event

Hi all,

sadly I currently don't have any access to a HMC and I am interessted if anybody knows if there is any way to trigger an executable/script in case of incomming hardware errors etc.. I don't remember there was any such option but then my last HMC was v7.x more than 2 years ago I saw.
I saw an article about to configure syslogd on a HMC to forward such events to another syslogd. In the official documentation/Redbook there was only mentioned to trigger a message via SMTP but that's not sufficient for my environment.
Our event management system is not an IBM product so I don't have options via Systems Director or Tivoli Monitoring/OMNIbus.

Any experience/hints on your side?

Jvm.dll failed to load error

In my AIX 7.1 , jre is not working. I have attempted reinstalling but not succeeded to get rid of the error. Following error I am getting (jvm.dll failed to load: global entrypoints not found)

I know the IBM Magazine article and the Redbooks about it but I would like to hear from first hand.

Chdev hostname change is not permanent

Dear Gurus,

I have an AIX 7.1 box whose hostname is set to turtle.domain.com (FQDN) and I'm trying to change it to turtle. I'm using the below command for this:

chdev -l inet0 -a hostname=turtle
On running this, the hostname changes to turtle but once i reboot the machine, FQDN is back.

I looked for other files that may be sending this hostname but nothing showed up.

Help, please..
